Love this, and as Austria is my absolute favourite place I especially loved your recollections of there - I can really recommend it as a holiday destination for younger kids too!

Hi Rachel I hope you don't mind me hijacking your comment....we would love to holiday in Austria, we have a baby who is almost 1 and would like to do avoid dragging carseat etc...does anywhere spring to mind?

Sorry I’m only seeing this now Orla. I think it depends on how comfortable you are with public transport, we’ve always hired a car and are happy hiring car seats too.

Flying into Munich gives you lots of great options - get the Sbahn from inside the airport into either Ost or Haupt Bahnhof, then transfer to a train into Austria. The ‘Bayern’ ticket is a good option which will take you to Salzburg…from there the Salzkammergut area is close by and beautiful with lots of lakes etc.

We’ve stayed around Zell am See/Kaprun and also Mayerhofen/the Zillertal, both would also be great and are fairly accessible by train. Other places we’ve stayed include the Wildschönau valley, but I think that would be more tricky without a car.

We’ve also stayed in Vienna and that’s very doable by public transport, but our kids were all older on that trip.

I have never eaten woodruff. Would you mind describing the flavor? It sounds incredible as I love an herbed cream. Thank you!

Yes Ann Marie it tastes a bit like vanilla, cinnamon and tonka bean. You can dry it for a few days to intensify the flavour or use it as an infusion. It contains a toxin called coumarin which can possibly be harmful if eaten in large amounts.

I think I knew that about sweet woodruff. Coumarin has anticoagulant properties, so people on blood thinners need to be careful about how much they ingest. I am going to have to try it though. It sounds so delicious. Thanks for your reply!
